the fact that it’s mostly non-latines or U.S.-born latines that say that Latin History for Morons is Great and Funny and latines who live in Latin America are saying it’s racist, problematic, and just genuine misinformation should tell you a lot about the trainwreck that is that show. it should be alarming that most of the positive reviews are only coming from people that aren’t who the show targets and misrepresents.

if you’re actually genuinely interested in Latin (the first red flag is calling it “Latin” in the first place) Latin American history then you should definitely consult latines from Latin America, and also peer reviewed and published works about Latin America from scholars, especially those that are not influenced by U.S. centrisim.

start by reading Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano (free pdf) to get an understanding of the affect of U.S. imperialism on Latin America. watch director John Pilger’s free documentary The War On Democracy to learn about how U.S. military intervention has impacted Latin American politics and people. understand how racism persists in Latin America and how these racial perceptions differ from those of the U.S. in past and present by reading this free scholarly article.

one last reminder: non-latines, we need to be better at giving voice to latines from Latin America about Latin American issues and history. at the very least, we need to be able to notice when history is being rewritten according to U.S. Centrism/Imperialism and white-washing. understand that any relic of “history” that contains any of those things is likely not an accurate representation, especially when it’s about Latin America.

It’s a minor pet peeve, but it is everywhere today so errrr…. please keep in mind that “Rest in Peace”/RIP literally comes from a latin phrase and is a very very deeply Christian expression.

When talking about the departed, Jews say “may their memory be a blessing.”

So please, when talking about a dead person who is Jewish, try to keep in mind that RIP is a Christian phrase.

Thank you. I didn’t even know it was a Christian phrase.

TIL that the saxophone was invented only in 1846 by Adolphe Sax. As a child, he survived a three-story fall, a gunpowder explosion, drinking a bowl of sulfuric water, a near-poisoning due to furniture varnish, and falling into a speeding river. His neighbors called him “little Sax, the ghost.”

via reddit.com

God really did not want the Saxophone invented.

perfect timing for this post showing up but Mr. Sax invented a bunch of other instruments (including ones that had a run but didn’t really stick around) but y’all wanna see one of his failed inventions?

behold, the fucking valved trombone

That’s not an instrument, that a section of plumbing

perpendicular honk engine

His mother once said that “he’s a child condemned to misfortune; he won’t live.”

The best part about this story is that Saxe lived from 1814 to 1894 – he died at 80.

I think he just wanted to live to spite the gods, his mother, and music.

it is so funny how life is just whatever. it’s hilarious. life is so regimented all the way through high school and then after that you just do literally whatever it’s all just whatever. you’re like “should i do this?” and everyone you know is like “just do whatever” absolutely incredible. that can’t be real
