The main reason this post is inaccurate is because current meme humor is inherently referential. It requires an understanding of certain events or cultural phenomena, and often contains nested layers of allusions.

People have been laughing at physical humor since our species could physically laugh. We haven’t been laughing at multi-part absurdist combinations of artificial images.

Basically “haha that guy got pied” is easily understandable regardless of cultural awareness.
