CroMa was established in ch 112

fycronaxmaka:

I know this fandom doesn’t care about Crona/Maka beyond them being Besties becauce Crona is nonbinary and the ship isn’t straight but I still am a bit baffled by how well people managed to ignore the big CroMa party that was chapter 112 of the Soul Eater manga.
Of course, they were not canonized per say, but the implications are much clearer than people give them credit for and at the very least on par with SoMa.

At the beginning of the chapter, Crona states in a monologue that the only thing keeping them from ending their own life is their attachment to Maka, which they refer to as an “obsession”
Of course, that’s an overstatement from them. But as someone who’s been partially devoured by the Kishin’s madness at that point, Crona is detached from their past life. Yet Maka’s meaning in their heart has not diminished even a bit deep down, and that strikes them as odd and “obsessive”
The emotional intensity of their feelings for Maka is clear.

Maka and Soul appear. Crona is in initial disbelief that Maka would come back for them. To convince themselves it’s really her, they brush against her hair, to which Maka responds by reassuringly taking their hand.

Crona then says that whatever “obsession” they have with Maka must be returned by her if she really did come all this way to save them. She doesn’t deny this, but instead corrects them on their choice of words. Enter Maka’s speech about “believing”

Whether they are “obsessed with” or “believing” in each other – that bond is powerful and mutual. And makes them blush while entwining fingers

Maka finishes her speech about the “believing” between them by defining it as followed, while still holding Crona’s hand

Something a person who can’t put their trust in anyone is incapable of? Something that makes humans strong? In reference to what have I heard these descriptions all over media before…

Crona eventually promises to stop the Kishin – for Maka. They explain how they feel about her, asking Soul, who’s implied to have romantic feelings for Maka throughout the series as well, if he understands, to which he only blushes

Then of course, this:

Crona is too detached from the world to understand the concept of atonement at that point. But the humanity left in them wants to fight for the one person that means, in their own words, more than the whole world to them – Maka. Crona is certain they can withstand and defeat the Kishin if it’s for her sake. Again, the emotional intensity of their feelings (which remember, have been established to be returned) is extremely apparent.

The ideas and words used – “obsessing” over someone, believing in them before anyone else did and when no one else would, fighting a greater evil only for that one person who matters more than anything, who is the exception even when you lose all your other ties to this world, your soulmate – are clearly romance coded tropes. Especially if they’re accompanied by gentle physical contact and blushes.

Finally, Maka and Soul must leave Crona behind. Maka promises to come back for them again and their response containing the word “believe” is intentional

It’s a final reminder that Crona and Maka’s bond will withstand any trial.
A final reassurance that this bond is what motivates Crona to immense bravery and sacrifice and makes them believe they will succeed.
A final proclamation of love.
