one presentation from the carnivorous plant conference that haunts me was this one on what we know about carnivorous plant evolution, and evolution within the different kinds of carnivorous plants. so the presenter was talking about different genuses of carnivorous plant and was going over different methods they’re using and stuff and was showing what they learned so far about divergence within the different families and then….and then they got to nepenthes.

apparently so far, all the genetic tests on nepenthes- the huuuge family of tropical pitcher plants native to Asia- have come back inconclusive, bc the plants fuck among themselves so much it’s impossible to see who came from who. all it seems like they’ve been doing for centuries is eating and fucking. the recent construction of modern roads connecting different jungles to each other has allowed previously contained species to escape their sex-laden prisons to grow along the new roadsides, fucking along the way and reaching new places with new oppurtunities to fuck.

they have fucked so much that so far, scientists have not been able to determine where the different species came from, because for every species you have like 80 hybrids between that species and all the other species, including whatever species they originally evolved from. they’re somehow diverse enough to create over 160 distinct species…but none of them are genetically different enough from one another to stop fucking and creating new hybrids, each of which then proceed to fuck.

and they’re still fucking. they just keep fucking. how is this happening. who came from who…how are they so powerful….it’s a genetic mystery
